German Photographer Captures Dharavi

Indian Photography Festival (IPF) and Goethe Zentrum organised a week-long photo exhibition of Helena Schaetzle’s (Winner of the Alfred Fried Award) Dharavi at State Art Gallery, Madhapur.

Dharavi in Mumbai is one of the biggest slums in the world. But it is also one of the largest hubs for the recycling and leather goods industries, which contributed to it’s nearly $ 700 million economy prior to the downturn. Its 60 neighbourhoods make it a virtual city within a megapolis, with its own patterns of building, economic activity, labour markets and communities that have developed over the course of Dharavi’s growth.  And now, the scale is all set to increase once the Rs. 15,000 crore Dharavi Redevelopment Plan (DRP) gets underway. Will Dharavi change beyond recognition?

Helena Schätzle studied photography at the Fine Arts University in Kassel and photojournalism at Technical University, Hannover. Photography has always been a way for her to explore the world and be able to look into corners most people usually never get to see. Over the last decade she has been based in India, Eastern Europe and Israel for her project on WWII witnesses and Holocaust survivors.
